English Language Proficiency is a requirement of eligibility for teacher registration when any part, of the required four years of the teaching qualification that make you eligible for registration, were undertaken in a country not included in the Australian migration policy as not requiring English Language Proficiency assessment.
Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the Republic of Ireland, the USA and Canada are the countries accepted under Australian migration policy as not requiring English language proficiency assessment and are accepted as the English-speaking countries.

In order to prove you are proficient in English, you must have completed one of the approved tests listed below within the last two years:
- An Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test with scores of at least band 8 in Speaking and Listening and at least band 7 in Reading and Writing, or
- An International Second Language Proficiency Rating (ISLPR) assessment with scores of level 4 in all four areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Such assessment will be deemed valid only if provided by approved IIAA accredited testing sites where the assessment is teacher focused.
Please note that postgraduate studies over and above those required for teacher registration cannot be accepted for the purposes of proving your proficiency in the English language.
If you have successfully completed one of the tests above in the last two years, you will need to provide a copy of the original test report form.
