Upholding the standards of the ACT teaching profession
The ACT Teacher Quality Institute (TQI) is an independent statutory authority established by the ACT Teacher Quality Institute Act 2010 (TQI Act) to build the professional standing of all ACT teachers, to enhance the community’s confidence in the teaching profession through professional regulation and practical initiatives to raise teacher quality. The Board reports directly to the Minister for Education and Early Childhood and emphasises collaboration across education settings and amongst teachers, early childhood services, schools and universities. TQI promotes continuous professional learning and development and the professionalism of all teachers in the ACT.
The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) is reviewing the Teacher Standards this year, have your say. Share your experiences and perspectives through an online survey, that is open to 7 August 2026. Click this link that will direct you to the Review of the Teacher Standards webpage, where you can access further information about the review and complete the online survey.
Employers play a role in supporting teachers and ensuring only registered and approved teachers are working within ACT schools. They must also understand and comply with certain obligations and notification requirements.
From 1 April 2024, teachers working in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) settings have been able to access teacher registration.

Rethinking Waste: From Waste to Action

Story Ground Professional Learning - Session 1/3
12 Aug 2026 16:00This TQI-registered professional learning opportunity offers three workshop sessions for teachers that bring together Indigenous Story practices with the disciplines of creative writing and literature.
Story Ground uses storying and writing to provide participants with opportunities to engage with contemporary and traditional Indigenous knowledge, cultural experience, and creative practice. Story Ground is based in culturally grounded and culturally responsive pedagogy. The course is designed to help teachers support both student wellbeing and academic growth. It is aligned to the Australian Curriculum Achievement Standards for English, the General Capabilities of Engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures, and Sustainability.
Through exploring the concept of perspectivism, teachers will be supported to work with Indigenous content in the classroom in a culturally responsive manner. They will experience Indigenous pedagogical practices through the workshops and content, and will be encouraged to embed this at their schools. In the final workshop, teachers will bring an example of their practice to share with others.
Please note, you need to attend all three nights/modules in the session for course completion.
