What is an accredited initial teacher education program?

The accreditation of initial teacher education university programs for pre-service teachers is vital to ensure that all teachers are prepared to a high standard and have the knowledge, skills and experiences to make a positive impact on student learning.

Australian initial teacher education programs are accredited by jurisdictional teacher regulatory authorities using nationally agreed standards and procedures. As a result of the Teacher Education Ministerial Advisory Group’s (TEMAG) report Action Now: Classroom Ready Teachers, strengthened standards and procedures have been developed and agreed to by all Education Ministers. Graduates of initial teacher education programs accredited by TQI, or its interstate/NZ equivalents, are eligible for registration with TQI, subject to meeting other eligibility requirements.

Professional Experience

All ACT accredited initial teacher education programs require pre-service teachers to participate in professional experience programs.  For the ACT, the initial teacher education providers, the three school sectors and the Teacher Quality Institute have developed the ACT Professional Experience framework.

Professional experience programs in the ACT must be supported by formal agreements between the ITE teacher education providers and schools/school systems.

All ITE students seeking to participate in professional experience in a school in the ACT are required to obtain approval with the ACT Teacher Quality Institute.  Approved Pre-service Teachers are placed on the ACT Pre-service Teacher Register.

Do I have to do a literacy and numeracy test?

Strong literacy and numeracy skills are an essential requirement to be an effective classroom teacher.

All Australian Education Ministers agree that the national Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) must be completed by all initial education students prior to graduation.

Successful completion of the national test prior to course completion and degree conferral will be mandatory for all students enrolling in an initial teacher education program in Australia from 1 January 2017.

What if I’m already enrolled in an initial teacher education program?

Although not a requirement for teacher registration in the ACT, you are encouraged to do the test prior to graduation. Successful completion of the test may enhance your employment prospects, both in Australia and internationally.

Please discuss the test and course completion requirements with your university, college or education provider.
