Public Interest Disclosure
Public interest disclosure (PID) is a process that aims to encourage people who become aware of certain misconduct in the public sector to come forward, by protecting them from retribution, reprisal, or retaliation. It also ensures that their information is investigated appropriately.
In the ACT, public interest disclosures are governed by the Public Interest Disclosure Act 2012 (PID Act), which provides a formal framework for determining what matters qualify as public interest disclosures, how public sector entities are to investigate and address such disclosures, and the protections given to people who make disclosures.
A report of disclosable conduct may be made:
- orally or in writing; and
- using any form of electronic communication.
Disclosures may be made anonymously and don’t need to refer to the PID Act. Disclosures may be made to:
