Guidance for School Leaders about Registration Renewal
School leaders play an important role in ensuring teachers maintain their registration and renew on time. School leaders are encouraged to:
Before Renewals Open (Before Mid-January)
Prepare workforce records:
- Remind teachers to update their employment details in the TQI portal so their current workplace is correctly recorded.
- Regularly download and review your registration report from the TQI portal.
- Confirm that all teachers employed at your workplace, including casual teachers, are correctly listed.
Check staff on leave:
- Contact teachers who are on extended leave or otherwise absent.
- Confirm they will meet the requirements for registration renewal.
Verify WWVP registration
- Remind teachers to provide TQI with evidence of current Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration.
Prepare for professional learning requirements
- Remind teachers to complete and record at least 20 hours of professional learning (PL) before the end of the calendar year.
- Ensure professional learning records are ready for professional conversations and workplace delegate verification.
Support teachers with extenuating circumstances
- Identify teachers who may not be able to meet the professional learning requirements due to extenuating circumstances.
- Encourage them to contact TQI to discuss a Professional Learning Variation Plan.
Once Renewals Open (Mid-January to 31 March)
Remind teachers to renew
- Renewal applications become available through the TQI portal from mid-January each year.
- Encourage teachers to submit their renewal application and pay the renewal fee before 31 March.
Monitor renewal progress
- Track progress using the registration report in the TQI portal. The renewal status may show:
- Not Submitted: The teacher has not yet submitted a renewal application.
- Submitted: The renewal application has been submitted but is not yet approved or finalised.
- Finalised: The renewal application has been approved and completed.
- Not Applicable: The teacher's registration expiry date is beyond 31 March and no renewal is currently required.
Key deadline
- All teacher registrations expire on 31 March each year unless renewed.
After 31 March
Monitor registration status
- From 1 April, any teacher who does not hold current registration is no longer authorised to teach in an ACT school.
- A teacher whose registration has expired must not teach until a new registration has been established.
