Teacher registration in the ACT is valid for 12 months and must be renewed each year.
To continue teaching in an ACT school, you must renew your registration by 31 March each year. To read more about your obligations as a registered teacher in the ACT, read more on the page Obligations for Registered Teachers.
Before you renew
Make sure you:
- hold a current Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration
- have completed and recorded your required professional learning
- have updated your contact and employment details in the TQI Portal
- continue to meet all registration requirements.
When can I renew?
The TQI Portal opens for registration renewal each February.
When renewals open, TQI will send all registered teachers an email with:
- instructions on how to renew
- links to the TQI Portal
- information about renewal requirements
- answers to common questions.
If you do not receive your renewal invitation, contact TQI.
How to renew your registration
- Log in to the TQI Portal and click ‘Apply to Renew’
- Review and update your details.
- Confirm you meet the registration requirements.
- Pay the renewal fee.
- Submit your renewal application by 31 March.
What happens if I do not renew?
If you do not renew your registration by the required date, your registration may lapse.
You cannot teach in an ACT school unless you hold current teacher registration or an approved Permit to Teach.
You must submit your application and pay the renewal fee by 31 March.
For how many years can I renew my provisional registration?
You are expected to transition to full registration within five years of being granted provisional registration. However, if this is not possible, you may request an extension enabling you to renew provisional registration.
Will I receive a card?
From 2024 TQI no longer issues plastic teacher registration cards. Following renewal, a new digital certificate and credential will be provided to you. You can also download and print a copy of your registration certificate from the TQI portal to provide as evidence to any party that may require it.
