Pre-service Teacher Approval

If you are enrolled in an accredited Initial Teacher Education (ITE) program and want to undertake a professional experience placement in an ACT school, you must first obtain approval from the ACT Teacher Quality Institute (TQI).

This requirement applies to all pre-service teachers, regardless of which university they attend.

You cannot undertake a professional experience placement in an ACT school until your approval has been granted.

There is no fee to apply for pre-service teacher approval.

Before You Apply

Before starting your application, make sure you have all required supporting documents.

You will need to provide evidence of:

• your identity
• your enrolment in an accredited Initial Teacher Education (ITE) program
• your Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration (for pre-service teachers, an equivalent registration that allows a person to work with children is acceptable)
• your eligibility for approval.

If you are studying a Graduate Diploma of Education approved in Western Australia, you will not be eligible for pre-service teacher approval. Only people undertaking nationally accredited initial teacher education programs are eligible for pre-service teacher approval in the ACT.

How to Apply

1. Create a TQI Portal account.
2. Complete the online application for Pre-service Teacher Approval.
3. Upload all required supporting documents.
4. Submit your application.

If you have already received approval, you do not need to apply again.

If you cannot find your approval email, contact TQI for assistance.

Your Responsibilities

TQI maintains a register of approved pre-service teachers.

You must ensure your information is accurate and kept up to date.

The register includes:

• your full legal name
• any previous names
• your date of birth
• your residential address
• your postal address (if different)
• your phone number
• your email address
• details of your ITE program and enrolment status
• your WWVP registration details
• details of your professional experience placements in ACT schools.

After You Are Approved

Once your application has been approved:

• you will receive an approval email
• you can undertake professional experience placements in ACT schools
• you can download your approval certificate from the TQI Portal
• you must provide your approval certificate to each school where you undertake a placement
• you can record your placement schools and placement dates through the Portal.

Keeping Your Details Up to Date

You must notify TQI within 21 days if:

• your name changes
• your address changes
• your WWVP registration expires, is suspended or otherwise changes
• you discontinue your course
• you transfer to a different course
• you complete your course.

Keeping your details current helps ensure the Pre-service Teacher Register remains accurate.
