ACT Considers New Registration Path for Retired Teachers
Once a teacher, always a teacher – and the ACT is looking to harness that enduring passion.
With teacher shortages across Canberra schools and early childhood settings, the Teacher Quality Institute is exploring options specifically for experienced retired teachers who want to continue part-time. Currently, 302 registered teachers aged 66-69 and 210 over 70 represent an untapped goldmine of expertise.
The proposal would create an adapted registration model that maintains all safety and competency standards while offering greater flexibility for seniors transitioning from full-time careers. These veteran educators bring decades of specialised knowledge, mentoring skills, and the ability to connect with students that doesn't disappear at retirement.
Why it matters: ACT schools desperately need both regular staff and casual relief teachers. Retired teachers offer a ready solution – if we can make registration work for their changed circumstances.
The consultation acknowledges a simple truth: teaching is a vocation, not just a job. Many retiring teachers would maintain their registration if offered pathways that recognise their reduced income and part-time availability while upholding professional standards.
The Teacher Quality Institute is seeking feedback on making registration more attractive for experienced retired teachers. Have your say on how we can better value and utilise our teaching veterans at https://www.tqi.act.edu.au/valuing-retired-teachers
