Registration paths

Most teachers begin with Provisional Registration. If you do not have the required evidence of teaching experience to support an application for Full registration, apply for Provisional registration and convert later.

Teachers with Full Registration meet the requirements for Provisional Registration plus some additional requirements for experience and proficiency.

Only experienced teachers are eligible to be considered for Full registration.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of at least four years of higher education (full-time or equivalent) study, including an initial teacher education program accredited in Australia, leading to the achievement of a recognised qualification
  • OR an overseas qualification assessed by TQI as equivalent 

If you are graduating in the near future do not complete the application until you have been issued with your final academic transcripts.  Incomplete applications will NOT be processed.

 

English language proficiency

  • Evidence that you have completed the full four years of required higher education study (or qualifications assessed as comparable) in English in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the Republic of Ireland, the USA or Canada
  • OR evidence that you have an IELTS Academic test (or equivalent) score of at least Band 8 in Speaking and Listening and at least Band 7 in Reading and Writing, achieved within the last two years. More.

Suitability to be a teacher

  • Your Australian, and if applicable overseas, criminal history record checks satisfy TQI.
  • You are either an Australian or New Zealand citizen or you hold permanent (indefinite) Australian residency status or an Australian work visa

Annual fee

You have paid the tax deductible application fee.

Experience

You have a Statement of Service showing you have completed 180 teaching days in the last 5 years.

How much will I pay?

Tax deductibe application fee.  The TQI registration year is 1 April to 31 March.  All registrations and permits to teach are valid to 31 March each year.  A tax deductible application fee is payable at the time of application for registration/permit to teach and annually during renewal.  The fee structure for initial applications for registration/permit to teach is shown below:

Applications will not be processed until the application fee has been paid.  An application fee is refundable if TQI does not grant you registration or a permit to teach.  You can pay the application fee online, using Visa or MasterCard.  You will be prompted to do this at the end of the online application process.
