Literacy and Numeracy Test

Do I have to do a literacy and numeracy test?

Strong literacy and numeracy skills are an essential requirement to be an effective classroom teacher.

All Australian Education Ministers agree that the national Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) must be completed by all initial education students prior to graduation.

Successful completion of the national test prior to course completion and degree conferral will be mandatory for all students enrolling in an initial teacher education program in Australia from 1 January 2017.

What if I’m already enrolled in an initial teacher education program?

Although not a requirement for teacher registration in the ACT, you are encouraged to do the test prior to graduation. Successful completion of the test may enhance your employment prospects, both in Australia and internationally.

The next testing period is scheduled for 15-29 August 2016. Registration for this test can be made from 4-25 July 2016. All ITE students are eligible to register for the August sitting of the test. Additional testing periods are planned for October and November/December this year, with dates to be advised.

Please discuss the test and course completion requirements with your university, college or education provider.
