About the Teacher Quality Institute
Purpose
For over a decade, the education profession in the ACT and nationally has been engaged in debate about the status of teaching and the need to support teachers in improving outcomes for students. In the ACT, consultation within the teaching profession, with government, with teacher educators, teacher unions and other professional organisations resulted in a call for an independent body to set standards, register teachers and promote professional learning.
TQI is the result of that consultative process. Establishing TQI is part of the ACT Government’s commitment to the Improving Teacher Quality National Partnerships agreement.
Under the ACT Teacher Quality Institute Act 2010, TQI will:
- register (or authorise to teach) teachers wishing to work in the ACT
- encourage and set standards for professional learning
- accredit education programs for both pre-service teachers and teachers
- develop and apply codes of professional practice
- determine standards for the profession (including assessment and certification standards) within a national framework.
Governance
TQI is governed by a cross sectoral Board comprising members from key ACT education stakeholders, the teaching profession and the community. A list of current Board members appears below.
